If you are interested in this tour, please call Dennis Jennings at 575-313-4383, or email me, for price and other information and/or to reserve your spot on this tour. Limited to 10 guests. (Some hiking required, hiking boots and other gear recommended - call for details.) This tour will circumnavigate Cooke's Peak, with an emphasis on Apache Wars history and Mogollon Mimbres culture sites in the area. We will hear Jerry Eagan explain the strategic importance of this area in Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo civilian and military exploration and travel through this region, and the evidence of hundreds of years of conflict between these groups and the Apaches. Stops at Fort Cummings, and explorations in the area for the fort's rifle range, cemetery, and Cooke's Spring, will lead to entry into desolate and rough Cooke's Canyon, site of many ambushes, battles, killings, and burials, some still visible. Once through the canyon we will make stops at Fryingpan Canyon and, time permitting, Pony Hills petroglyph sites. The tour will begin and end at the intersection of NM 180 and NM 26, five miles north of Deming. An optional jaunt afterword into Deming for dinner at Palma's Italian Restaurant will top off the day's activities. Hope to see you on the 16th!
