Hiking opportunities are everywhere in Grant County, including at least two great walks in downtown Silver City itself (through the historic downtown and in the Boston Hill greenbreak)!
Backcountry opportunities are numerous and range from tranquil walks to challenging treks in deep wilderness. Some trails are open to mixed use, including some for horses, ATVs and bicycles. Check with state or federal manegement offices before planning a mounted trail ride of any kind.
The Gila National Forest has hundreds of miles of trails for hikers, horseback riders, mountain bikers and motor sports enthusiasts.
The Gila's trails will lead you from the edge of the Chihuahuan desert to the brink of alpine tundra through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Southwest. The historic Catwalk Trail and the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail are two of our more famous routes but there are many others just as fascinating. From a smooth path through the deep forest to a challenging ascent of the headwaters of the Gila River, opportunities abound for most experience levels. Come explore the Gila National Forest.
