Chamber of Commerce Begins Second Century of Service
to Silver City and Grant County!

The Town of Silver City was established in 1870 and became the second incorporated community in New Mexico in 1878. The first public school in New Mexico opened in Silver City in 1882, the railroad arrived in 1883, and New Mexico Territorial Normal School (today’s Western New Mexico University ) was founded in 1893.

The town continued to grow as the hub of business for the agriculture, health, mining and natural resource related industries in Grant County, and by 1905 several businessmen decided that it was time to establish a Chamber of Commerce for the community. The Chamber has continued to “serve it’s members by promoting business and commerce in Grant County” ever since, and is thrilled to be startaing its second century of service in 2006.

The Chamber is researching records at the Silver City Museum and Silver City Daily Press to develop historic documentation of the Chamber since it’s inception. To the right is a copy of the first advertisement sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce in 1915, as an example of the community promotion that has continued over the years.
